Whittaker Chambers was born in London, England, on March 8, 1895. He was the second son of a Presbyterian minister. In 1917 he moved to Paris, where he worked as a journalist for the New York daily newspaper "The World." In 1922 his book Witness became a bestseller. It received critical acclaim and won the Pulitzer Prize for Literature in 1923. Chambers spent most of the rest of his life in Europe.

He returned to the United States only once after his release from prison in 1938, for a visit to his sister. He died on February 17, 1961.
